The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1977 and currently is the largest department at National Central University. The department currently has 40 full-time faculty members, 4 technicians and 5 supporting staff. We have the largest undergraduate and graduate programs in the university. Today, nearly 1000 students (620 in BS, 270 in MS, 110 in Ph.D.) pursue studies in may diverse areas of mechanical engineering, with approximately 300 receiving bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees each year. Our curriculum is designed to have students graduate with the ability to apply knowledge of science, mathematics, and engineering, and the capability to work effectively and provide leadership and technical expertise in multidisciplinary teams. Our graduates are employed by many of the top corporations, research laboratories and universities in the nation.

The goal of our undergraduate program is to prepare the graduates for diverse careers in both mechanical engineering and other engineering fields, or for graduate study in engineering or in other fields where a fundamental engineering background is desirable or necessary. In order to provide students with a broad education in traditional and emerging areas of mechanical engineering, our undergraduate program is currently divided into three major study areas: Opto-Mechatronics, Advanced Materials and Precision Manufacturing, and Design & Analysis. In addition, capstone courses like "Innovation of Mechanical Design Workshop" and "Mechanical Design Workshop for Electronic Industry" provide unusual learning opportunities for undergraduate students to work on actual design problems for development of commercial products through which they can bridge class work and engineering in practice.

Our graduate program combines a rich menu of compelling course work with multidisciplinary research to prepare researchers in specialized areas within the field of mechanical engineering such as Solid Mechanics & Design, Advanced Materials and Precision Manufacturing, Thermal-Fluid Science & Energy, System Engineering, Opto-Mechatronics, and Biomedical Engineering. Our multidisciplinary graduate program is specially designed to provide a strong theoretical foundation, hands-on experience, and industry contact and exposure. Research in the department also reflects the interests and creativity of our faculty and students and explores a spectrum of emerging areas. The department is committed to educating new generations of researchers, to expanding its research partnerships with government agencies and with industry, and to working closely with departments across the College of Engineering and the University in cross-disciplinary research efforts.
