The B.S. program is designed so that graduates will be ready to pursue satisfying and productive careers or graduate study in a wide variety of fields. The discipline is very broad raging from the aesthetic aspects of design to highly technical scientific research. It is increasingly common for students to be engaged in interdisciplinary work that may even incorporate aspects of physics, chemistry, and the life sciences. Areas of study include solid mechanics, thermal science, fluid dynamics, design, materials engineering, precision manufacturing, energy science and technology, computer-aided technology, sensing and control, optics, advanced physics and mathematics, chemistry, nano- and micro-scale technology, mechatronics, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and biomechanical engineering. The B.S. program in our department is currently divided into three major study areas:
